Chapter 7
As if they had shared a bed for all eternity, Laurel awoke groping for Doug. Encountering only a pillow and tangled bed linen, she sighed her disappointment and tried to conjure a dream that would restore him to her. But her body let her know it had had enough of lolling about, thank you, and she opened her eyes.
The white rose Dean had given her that morning had begun to unfold, perfuming the room. Even more beautiful to her eyes was the sight of a note under the slender silver vase in a bold hand that could only be Dougâs.
âDearest,â she read, âI know how sensitive you are about Dean, and rightly! So Iâm reluctantly abandoning you while the coast is clear. Iâll walk to Farmingdale Center and get a cab to the hotel from there. If you wake up feeling as glorious as you look right now, want to show me the local sights? Not that I could see anything more appealing than what I got to look at today, you luscious, shameless creature! I thought maybe we could drive to the shore for lobster laterâthink Dean and his red-haired girl would like to double-date with a couple of old fogies? Of if youâd rather just be a twosome, drop the word in your humble slaveâs ear. By the way, youâd apparently knocked the phone off the hook in your sleep this morning, which is why Dean couldnât reach you when he tried to callâand I left it off so you could sleep. I adore, you, Lady Blue. XXX, Doug.â
Reading it over and over, glad that no one was there to witness her silly, teenage behavior, Laurel basked in the tenderness Doug had conveyed. Did she dare to believe that the real Doug had written this noteâand the cynical, tough-tempered Doug was a phantom whoâd melted into the air? Not that sheâd want all his edges to be smoothed, she forced herself to admit. His teasing comments earlier notwithstanding, she didnât really want a life full of bossy menâbut she didnât want to be anybodyâs boss, either. A meeting of strengths was what appealed to her, whether the relationship was the one between her and Dean, or her and Elsie, or her andâdid she dare think of him this way?âa new lover.
Letting her fingers playfully stroke the skin he had repeatedly caressed to fever pitch, she wondered if the act of love really had been love for Doug. Lord knows heâd poured reckless words of tenderness into her ears, hinting at a never-ending future of intimacy, but she was well aware that only a fool gave full credence to utterances made between the sheets. If she just knew more about him, were better able to weigh and sort his actions! In a sense she felt she knew everything that really mattered about him because her every instinct had told her he had character, even if he seemed to go out of his way to conceal it. Then again, she knew so few facts about him.
